Fatboy Slim will be given the go-ahead this week to stage a concert for 22,000 people on Brighton beach.

The Hove DJ, real name Norman Cook, will hold the gig on the weekend of September 26 and 27. It will be his first summer concert on the beach since 2002, when 250,000 revellers brought the city to a standstill.

Plans will go in front of two Brighton and Hove City Council committees this week, with council officials recommending the shows are approved.

Cook, currently on tour in Brazil, told The Argus he was pleased with the developments.

This week councillors will vote whether to let Cook hold the concert, dubbed Big Beach Boutique 4, in Madeira Drive, where the DJ played to 19,000 fans amid torrential rain on new year's day 2007. Permission will come with the proviso that the same strict crowd-control methods are used.

Tickets were only sold to those with a BN postcode and high fences were erected to stop ticketless fans gathering to get a free view. Fans were not allowed on the beach because in 2002 some were injured and emergency services struggled to reach them through the crowd.

In September Cook will play one show and other artists, as yet unnamed, will appear on the second. The shows will run from 5pm to 9.30pm, leaving pubs and clubs expecting two busy nights.

The shows are not set in stone, however, as Cook hmust apply for an events licence.

Residents will be consulted before it is granted.

He has also been told he must have the full backing of emergency services before a final go ahead is given.
