FIREFIGHTERS spent almost eight hours tacking a blaze involving 200 tonnes of scrap metal.

Emergency services were called to the fire at a breaker’s yard in Adversane on Friday, June 3.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said seven fire engines attended the blaze.

“Crews tackled a blaze involving 200 tonnes of scrap metal at a breaker’s yard on Friday night and into the early hours of this morning,” a spokesman said.

“Seven fire engines, plus the Command and Support Unit from Haywards Heath, Aerial Ladder Platform from Guildford and water carrier from Petworth were called to the scrapyard in Adversane Lane.”

The initial call to West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was at 11.10pm on Friday. The fire was dealt with by 6.54am on Saturday.

Two hose-reel jets and a water relay were used to help extinguish the fire, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said.

The seven fire engines in attendance were from Billingshurst, Partridge Green and Guildford, as well as two from Horsham and Worthing respectively.

Last year, fire crews tackled a large blaze at a scrap metal yard in Newhaven.

Meanwhile, crews also attended a "deep-seated" fire at Ripley Scrapyard in Newhaven last year.
