I have long been convinced that administrative power does eventually corrupt. So Christopher Hawtree's warning signal of what important decisions could now be made in relative privacy - perhaps even secrecy - with the new Cabinet system of Brighton and Hove City Council is timely (Letters, February 8).

The Government is encouraging this system as it believes it will help bring fresh life and more efficiency into council activities. But the danger of important decisions being made in relative privacy is due not so much to the structure of councils but the ignorance and indifference of the public.

Public interest would be fostered if the council would only introduce webcasting of their proceedings so that those who find it difficult to attend meetings could just log on and observe them at work as we can with East Sussex County Council and other councils throughout the land.
