With regard to the article about Oakdene Homes (The Argus, February 5), local opposition to the regeneration of the West and East Quay and Newhaven in general is not well founded. The recent planning meeting was well attended but a strident minority insisted in putting their views ahead of all others. The views and opinions expressed by Melvyn Simmons are not those of the majority and one would enquire of his authority to speak for the people of Newhaven.
The proposed regeneration projects and those completed are superb examples. Both Oakdene and Sea Containers should be applauded and the further regeneration of the town centre supported by all.
Newhaven is a jewel that has been allowed to tarnish. Why? Weak leadership, inept planning conjoined to allow the circulatory system which destroyed the commercial centre of the town. Poor policing has allowed the vandal to rule, culminating in the destruction by fire of the local school.
