The Bairns, last year's album from this young Norhumbrian band, made it onto a lot of lists as one of last year's best releases. They enhanced this reputation by winning the Horizon award (for the most promising act) at the Folk Awards last week.
The intimate Joogleberry is probably the ideal venue to showcase their talents. The band, fronted by the two Unthank sisters, Rachel and Becky, is particularly strong on the more traditional North-Eastern songs.
They also performed excellent versions of Nick Drake's Riverman and Robert Wyatt's Sea Song, showing a taste for going outside the mainstream.
The singers are supported by Steph Cooper on piano and Niopha Keegan on violin and accordion.
The sisters' self-deprecating humour, a burst of clog dancing and a song in the ancient Norn language, all added to an enthralling evening.
