The tragic incident in Wilson Avenue over the weekend puts last week's article on youth activity in the area into perspective (The Argus, February 6).

It is important that people in the rest of the city realise that Whitehawk has benefited from millions of pounds of Government investment during the past ten years, and from the dedication and hard work of many local people who have been rightly recognised for their commitment to young people.

The Crew Club offers pool, a recording studio, drama, dance, console and arcade games, sports teams, a recently opened £500,000 multi-use games area, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award schemes and much more.

Next to the library, Whitehawk Youth Centre also has a range of activities on offer and not far away The Manor is home to many groups and sports clubs.

Around Whitehawk there is East Brighton Park, with play areas, sports pitches, tennis courts and of course Whitehawk Football Club.

A short distance away is the marina, with its bowling complex and cinema.

There is always more that can be done to provide young people with a place to go and activities to engage in but Whitehawk is better served than most thanks to the strong community there, the organisation and people that work with youths on the estate and the external support that has been drawn in.

It was good to hear the young people of Whitehawk interviewed in the article commenting on how the area has improved and the recognition by The Argus reporter that reputation and appearances do not necessarily reflect behaviour.

I'm sure everyone will want to send their best wishes to the families of those who died or who were injured in the incident, as well as to those members of the emergency services who dealt with the immediate aftermath.
