The crash happened last night around 8pm on Lewes Road, near Blackboys east of Uckfield.
Farm machinery fell off the lorry and can be seen on the road.
The driver of the car was taken to hospital with serious injuries that are not considered to be life-threatening.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Police were called to a collision between a car and a heavy-goods vehicle (HGV) on Lewes Road, near Blackboys, at about 8pm on Monday, September 12.
“Both vehicles were recovered, and the road was later re-opened.
“A 30-year-old man from Crowborough has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and has since been released under investigation while enquiries continue.
“Anyone with any relevant information or footage of the collision can email collision.appeal@sussex.police.uk, quoting Operation Blackstone.”
The farm equipment is a "Terradisc" which is a type of harrow attached to tractors used to cultivate fields.
