Neighbours are being kept awake by loud music and "sex noises" from Sir Winston Churchill's old school.

Residents of Brunswick Road, Hove, claim they have been subjected to a barrage of yob behaviour from the occupants of the Misses Thompsons' Preparatory School - now a YMCA hostel - including screwdrivers being thrown at windows and drunken rows in the street.

Neighbour Tim Wearing said: "Churchill is famous for his two fingered victory sign but at the moment I feel like turning it around at the YMCA."

Sir Winston attended the school in the late 19th century.

Brunswick Road residents say the current occupants lack Sir Winston's manners and have been caught baring their backsides at a pensioner.

Mr Wearing said: "It is like living in a nightclub at times.

There can be music at all times of the day. I work in North Laine and it can be quite hectic during the day. So when I get home I just want to put my feet up without having to battle against all this other noise."

He said the problem had worsened in the past 12 months.

He said: "My neighbour, who lives in the flat underneath me, said people from the YMCA had been mooning her."

One of the most recent incidents was of a group of girls simulating sexual noises during the early hours of the morning.

Mr Wearing said: "Some girls in the forecourt started to shout out some guy's name and start moaning and groaning, then there was a guy hanging out the window swearing at them."

He said he had contacted the police to report incidents of antisocial behaviour but the culprits had always dispersed by the time officers arrived.

The shop worker said: "I have been in contact with the YMCA management.

"They are apparently drawing up acceptable behaviour contracts with residents. I'm not sure the kind of person that thinks it is fun to throw bottles into the paths of moving cars is going to desist if it goes against the terms of their contract."

Stevie Graves, Hove YMCA housing manager, said she accepted there had been some problems but they were now under control.

She said: "Whenever we have been asked to deal with anti social behaviour before we have done so straight away."

Paul Elgood, Liberal Democrat councillor for the Brunswick and Adelaide ward, said: "I am very concerned that there has been a steady rise in antisocial behaviour coming from the building."

He said he had asked Brighton and Hove City Council to investigate the problem further and would meet with representatives from Hove YMCA next week to discuss the matter.
