Anyone passing Brighton Station will have seen the new offices of East Sussex Credit Union, officially opened this week by anti-poverty campaigner Polly Toynbee (The Argus, May 2).

The new offices are good news for the city. The reality of the credit crunch is that mainstream financial services will increasingly abandon the most vulnerable members of our society to loan sharks and high-interest doorstep lenders.

The more people who choose to save with the credit union, the better placed we will be collectively to withstand the latest crisis of global banking and avoid the worst extremes of poverty.
