A young man is being treated by paramedics after leaping from Eastbourne Pier in a craze known as "tombstoning".
Eastbourne lifeboat crew had initially been called to pick up two canoeists whose kayak had overturned in Pevensey Bay.
One of them was taken to hospital and treated for the effects of being in the water.
The lifeboat then diverted to rescue the man who had jumped off the west side of the pier.
He was dragged from the water by the coastguard and at 3.45pm was still being treated by paramedics outside the Chatsworth Hotel in Grand Parade.
