When first announced that Funny Girl was to be presented in this theatre, it raised the question - would such a big show work on a small stage?

The answer is not only does it work, but it provides an exhilarating opening to the 2008 Festival season.

The story of Fanny Brice, whose looks made her an unlikely Broadway star, tells how her comedic talent overcame that problem and helped her to stardom. It's also the love story between her and playboy gambler, Nick Arnstein.

The intimacy of the theatre and the staging by Angus Jackson distils the essence of the show into a potent brew. Only a bare stage and a few props are used but these are heightened dramatically by the clever use of curtains, drapes and a striking collection of costumes that ravish the eye.

Samantha Spiro is superlative - she captures well the comic zaniness of Fanny but she also touches the heartstrings. What might be lacking in vocal technique is more than made up for with acting that emphasises Brice's character.

Mark Umbers and Sheila Steafel head a strong cast who provide excellent support.
