At the weekend we had sun, beach and sea but no facilities. After a delightful time on the beach, a swim in the sea and good food, I just wanted to use a toilet - but where?

There are no facilities near the beach. At the Meeting Place, it's pay as you go. Twenty pence and half an hour of queuing later - relief. This is not good enough.

In America and Australia, the beach areas not only have toilets but fresh-water showers, recycling and rubbish bins. What is wrong with us?

Are we that behind the times? Are we so far off the tourism map that it doesn't matter?

We depend so much on day-trip visitors and yet we care so little for their welfare once they are here. And we, the locals, need to pee as well.
