A French student was killed as she cycled along the A23 to join the EDO weapons protest.

Marie Vesco, who would have turned 20 next week, was pronounced dead at the scene after a collision involving two silver Ford vehicles on the southbound carriageway near the Hickstead turning at Burgess Hill yesterday.

A politics student at London Metropolitan University, Marie was a keen cyclist and was making her way from London to Brighton by bike to take part in the protest at the EDO factory.

She had been riding along the hard shoulder but was hit as she crossed an exit slip road.

Marie's boyfriend and her best friend, Ana, were cycling just yards from her and watched on as she was thrown from her bike and dragged 20 metres beneath the wheels of a car.

She collided with a car moving from the main carriageway onto a slip road before hitting another and being pinned underneath it.

Any witnesses to the accident should call Sussex Police on 0845 6070999 and quote Operation Colca.

my condolences to the family.

Making ill informed comments about what happened is completely inappropriate, and certainly not funny.

It sou8nds like a terrible accident, and it may not be anyone's fault. my thoughts also go to the driver, as whatever happened, he/she would not have wanted to be involved in this sad event.

My thoughts go out to Marie's family and friends, and to all who knew her. As with Sashka my thoughts also go out to those who were involved in the insident.

To the family / friends, please do not take notice of the ignorant people who make nasty comments on here - they are not representative of the many who feel for you.

God Bless. RIP. x

This is more than a tragedy. We are living in a world where cars come first, cars come second and cars come third. People come so far down the food chain that we have lost sight of the value of a human life. Here, we have lost a caring human being, someone who cares about people, someone who cares about us and the world we live in. We, as a society must stop this killing of innocent souls. We must learn to value life. God bless you, Marie.

Marie had the right to be there, the driver only was given the privilege.
Marie was clearly a fighter if she was biking to a protest. I hope her friends and family will fight for her! You will have support.

The article is a bit inaccurate in that her boyfriend was yards behind and only arrived to the place after it had happened and Ana, was not her best friend, her closer friends who also were there were too upset to talk to journalists so I took on.

I would like to thank every one in Brighton and in London who were wonderful to us, putting us up in their homes and putting up with us, always respecting our need to talk, our need to silence ... offering us all the help possible.

Also thanks to Marie's parents for giving us such a wonderful girl who will inspire us all for a long time. My heart goes to you ...

I am writing to offer my condolances. It is a shocking tragedy. Two of my brothers were cycling down from London with Marie when the accident happened. Although I can not be there for the funeral and did not know Marie, my thoughts go out to her family and friends.

We morn for her and all victims of cars. Here are 3 other stories of victims, and how often the press try to change the story and blame the cyclists, or when the cops don't even give the car driver a citation. No word for that sadness.
