Multiple secondary schools in Brighton are closed as a result of teachers strikes taking place today.

The schools are closed as the NEU union takes industrial action over a pay dispute.

While some schools will remain open in some capacity, others are either closing fully or partially with provisions in place for vulnerable students.

Varndean School has confirmed that the school will be closed for students today as a result of the strikes.

Varndean College has also announced its closure due to strikes, but the college will remain open for second year pupils for practice exams.

Longhill High School has also announced its closure but has said that they will be accommodating children of key workers.

The school will also open for vulnerable children and the college will operate a similar system to plans used in the Covid-19 pandemic.

Unlike most schools in the area, Brighton Aldridge Community Academy has announced that they will be open as normal for Y7, 11, 12 and 13 students.

Y7 and 11 students will be required to wear PE kit to lessons, whereas Y8, 9 and 10 students will be set work online but will not attend in person.

King’s School has also announced that the school will be “partially open” as a result of the strikes.

Sarah Price, headteacher of the school, confirmed that Y11 will be in with some provisions put in place for vulnerable students.

Other schools that have decided to close include Cardinal Newman School and Sixth Form College and Blatchington Mill Secondary School.

Schools are closing as a result of the NEU strikes which are taking place in February and March.

As well as strikes today, further strikes in Brighton and Sussex are scheduled for March 2 as well as March 15 and 16.

Demonstrations for the strikes are expected to be held across Brighton and Sussex in support of the NEU action.

Protests will be held in The Level in Brighton at 11am. Further demonstrations will also be held at Hastings Pier and in Hyde Park in Eastbourne.
