A Labour party advert slamming the Greens for their “shameful” performance on recycling has “backfired” on an MP, say the city’s Conservatives.
Lloyd Russell-Moyle, Labour MP for Kemptown, launched a digital advert which slammed the Greens for their performance on recycling in Brighton and Hove, stating that it was only 30.1 per cent and “the numbers speak for themselves”.
However, Facebook users commenting on the advert quickly pointed out the previous Labour administration of 2015-2020 left the city’s recycling rate in an even worse state, with only 29.4 per cent of waste recycled in 2019-20, the final year of its administration.
Conservative environment, transport and sustainability spokesman Councillor Samer Bagaeen said this was another example of Labour not being honest with the public in their advertising in the lead up to Thursday's elections.

“It’s another week and another example of Labour misleading the public,” said Cllr Bagaeen.
“First we had Labour telling residents they didn’t want to build on Benfield Valley when in fact they have voted six times to build on Benfield and Whitehawk Hill as part of their own local development plan.
“Now, this week, we have Lloyd Russell-Moyle’s attack poster on recycling, which has instantly backfired given that the city’s recycling rate was worse after five years of Labour.
“The truth is the numbers do speak for themselves - both Labour and Greens have a terrible record on rubbish and recycling. They have had 12 years running rubbish and recycling in the city between them and the service is worse than ever.
“The recycling rate of Brighton and Hove is currently nearly half that of Conservative-run West Sussex."
Lloyd Russell-Moyle hit back at the Tories’ claims, saying: "I won't be lectured by the Conservatives. They've slashed 40 per cent off our city's budget in the last 13 years and are responsible for the gutting of our public services.
“On Thursday, the city will deliver its judgement on them and I'm hoping they'll be relegated to a handful of councillors.”
