The plans to charge drivers in the Lewes Road, North Street and Seven Dials areas are likely to unfairly hit people who live and work in those areas (The Argus, May 1).

These Green Party plans haven't been thought through very well - they are likely to penalise people who live in the central areas and those who are less well off.

It seems that the Greens have contributed to the congestion problems through their opposition to park and ride schemes plus their support for narrowing main roads, thereby causing more congestion and displacing traffic into residential streets.

The geography of our city with the sea to the south and the Downs to the north means that traffic often has to travel along certain routes.

They are intending to penalise people who need to use their vehicles for work including care workers, people with caring responsibilities, builders, tradespeople and those who work unsocial hours.

The Greens will also be making those people pay for parking their own vehicles in the declining number of parking spaces available, including plans to charge motorcyclists for parking.

Yes, even motorcyclists could now face parking charges, according to documents put before the environment and transport committee of the council.

People living in the Seven Dials, New England, West Hill and North Laine area could all be paying more because of the failures of this "Green" council.

Let us not forget that their support for the loss-making i360 is also costing us all more.

What is needed are co-ordinated park and ride schemes with national policies that support public transport and encourage more people to use less polluting vehicles.
