Residents have complained of an ‘appalling situation’ as beachgoers have been spotted just metres from a seal, despite advice to keep well away.

The seal was on the beach in Kemp Town, Brighton, yesterday afternoon when sunseekers were stood very close to it.

Louise Morley, a university professor from Kemp Town, was at the beach at the time.

She approached people near the seal and told them of advice to stay at least 50 metres away.

“This is an appalling situation that needs to be strategically managed, rather than left to concerned individuals to report abuse and deal with abusers,” said Professor Morley.

“The seal was just a photo opportunity for them. It lunged nervously several times as adults, children, and unleashed dogs invaded its space.”

British Divers Marine Life Rescue, a charity which provides frontline support to marine mammals, is monitoring the safety of the seal.

The charity is urging beachgoers to keep their distance.

"We know its tempting to try and get a closer look, but please stay at least 50 metres away, keep noise to a minimum and of course keep dogs on leads at all times," said a spokeswoman for the charity.

The seal has been spotted on the beach a few times but a spokeswoman for the charity said they are "not too worried" about the mammal as it looks healthy and a good weight.

The seal has hauled out several times but returned to the water unaided each time.

He is moulting so needs rest as the process uses a lot of energy.

The charity spokeswoman added: "We think the seal is hauling out again because he has not been able to get the rest it needs so it is really important we stay well away and allow it to rest."

Prof Morley raised concerns about an incident in London two years ago, when a seal which was attacked by a dog had to be put down.

Volunteers from British Divers Marine Life Rescue will continue to monitor the seal's safety.
