Police have said a man found lying in a field with "blood over his face" turned down help from officers.
The man was found in a field by a walker near the water tower just off Keymer Road in Burgess Hill on Saturday evening, shortly after 6pm.
The walker immediately called 999, who responded to the scene - and also told nearby residents online. They said: "The man lying in a field by the water tower surrounded by beer bottles and with blood over his face has been reported to the police, and the ambulance has been callled."
But when the emergency services arrived, police said he refused any help.
Instead, they gave him advice on how to stay safe.
A spokesman for the force said: "Officers responded to the scene and engaged with the man, who refused any assistance. He was given safeguarding advice. No suspicious circumstances."
