Several Sussex towns and villages have been named among those with the oldest populations in the country.

Census data revealed that Rustington, Bexhill and Seaford are among the medium-sized towns outside London with the most older people.

The data also showed that Golden Cross near Hailsham was among the large villages with the most elderly population.

In the 2021 census, Rustington was found to have a median age of 56 while Bexhill and Seaford averaged at 54 years old.

They were ranked against other towns with between 20,000 and 74,999 people.

Similarly, Eastbourne was among the large towns, with 75,000 to 199,999 people, with an average age of 45 years.

Golden Cross was found to have an average age of 72 years old, meaning it had one of the highest average ages in large villages in the UK.

The census data was released by the Office for National Statistics as part of analysis of the statistics from the March 2021 survey.
