A flash mob treated spectators on Brighton’s Palace Pier to an afternoon of dance and theatre.

The Narradance group’s production of The Caterpillar and The Blackbird took crowds by storm on Wednesday as performers “showcased the unifying power of theatre and dance”.

It was the start of Narradance’s tour of the South Coast, which is already proving to be a hit with crowds.

A spokeswoman for the theatre company said: “Everybody embraced the atmosphere, people’s faces were lighting up when they saw the group.

“The young and old danced, clapped and laughed together, showcasing the unifying power of theatre and dance.”

And it has now been announced that Karl Howman, famed for his roles in Brush Strokes and EastEnders, will lend his voice to the role of the Wise Old Owl when the production hits theatres later this month.

“With the heartwarming success of the flash mob, there's no doubt that the upcoming shows will be nothing short of magical,” said the spokeswoman.

“We are urging audiences to book their tickets now to secure a spot at the Roedean Theatre, De La Warr Pavilion, and The Stag Sevenoaks.

“Get ready to embark on an unforgettable adventure of growth, friendship, and fun – where theatre magic comes to life, touching hearts and spreading joy.”

Narradance will be at Roedean Theatre, Brighton, on August 19 and the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill, on September 15.

The Caterpillar and The Blackbird tells the story of a bored caterpillar who wants to travel the world and upon meeting the pair decide to make the journey together.

The pair meet a host of exciting characters along the way.

But the lesson that is most important for the young caterpillar to learn is the value of friendship as she and the blackbird form an “unbreakable bond” that will see the caterpillar through her metamorphosis into a beautiful butterfly.

Tickets for the shows are available to purchase from the theatres now.
