A 70-year-old joined her swimming group to make the 16km journey from the offshore windfarm all the way to the seafront.

Frances Holliss, from Brighton, decided to take on a challenge for her 70th birthday with her sea swimming team Salty Sea Birds.

They decided to do a swim relay all the way from Rampion windfarm to Brighton seafront last Sunday, August 20.

Frances, 70, chose to do the swim for Cancer Research and has raised almost £5,000 in total.

She said: “I knew I was going to turn 70 and it felt like a milestone. I was sitting on the beach and thought I would like to do some kind of challenge for my birthday.

“Twelve of us swam back as part of relay. We each did an hour of swimming. It’s around 10 miles all together.

“There is quite a range of abilities so we paired up with people of a similar level to us. It was more than I had ever swam.

“The first pair did around three kilometres. I didn’t record how far I went.

“When we got near the shore, we all jumped off and swam in together. It was wonderful.

“I didn’t think we would be able to see the city so clearly, the windfarm looks so far when you’re on the beach. But the other way it was quite clear.

“We ranged from 30 to 70.”
