Thousands of people descended on a school field for Woodingdean Carnival at the weekend.

The field at Rudyard Kipling Primary School was filled with more than 40 stalls providing fun activities run by businesses, charities and organisations on September 2.

Revellers enjoyed food and a bar and there were plenty of things for children to do including a taster aerial skill session with Blue Moon Circus, a teacup carousel and an inflatable helter-skelter.

The day began with the arrival of the carnival parade which saw groups walk and dance their way from Central Park to the field.

The colourful parade arrived at the field just before 11am to be welcomed by Brighton and Hove Mayor Councillor Jackie O’Quinn who officially opened the event.

The winner of the 2023 carnival parade was Oak Cottage Nursery.

Throughout the day, acts showcased their skills in a performance arena.

Alix Macfarlane, who chairs Woodingdean Carnival, said: “Thank you to everyone who supported the event in so many ways. Woodingdean Carnival is only possible thanks to a small and dedicated team of volunteers, and we couldn’t have done it without the generous support of our local businesses.

“We are particularly grateful to Rudyard Kipling Primary School, especially the senior management and site management team who gave their time, energy and enthusiasm during the school summer holiday to support the carnival committee and make sure Woodingdean Carnival 2023 was such a fabulous success.”

Headteacher of Rudyard Kipling Primary School Euan Hanington said: “It was an honour to welcome carnival to our school to help make sure the event could go ahead after the postponement earlier in the summer.

“Watching the field and school grounds fill with stalls, attractions and, most importantly, so many people from our community was truly wonderful.”
