The opening night of the city’s newest art gallery went off with a bang.

A few hundred people representing Brighton’s broad spectrum of culture packed into Helm, on the corner of Jubilee Street and North Road, last Thursday (September 7) for a night of champagne, canapes, and contemporary artwork.

The project is headed up by Rockwater boss Luke Davis with curator friend Eden Maseyk and does away with the stuffy atmosphere that so often comes with galleries with the help of a well-stocked bar and friendly staff.

In fact, the atmosphere is so good we could almost forget we were surrounded by artwork valued at tens of thousands of pounds.

Luke and Eden were flitting around the gallery sharing their enthusiasm for the contemporary project, as the split-level venue gradually became full of the city’s arty types.

Luke said: "Helm is about creating a new kind of welcoming and dynamic space where art is more than displayed, it’s actually enjoyed and brought to life.”

The gallery serves coffee, wines, and a great selection of draught beers, and will host live music events, painting classes and artist talks.
