Emergency fencing has been placed around the Maderia Lift due to fears its structure is unstable.
Brighton and Hove City Council said the cordon has been set up “to keep people safe” after a report on the condition of the structure “highlighted concerns” about the walkway around the top of the lift.
The right of the wooden structure, halfway along Marine Parade, has been torn away revealing bits of foam and polystyrene with debris scattered on the ground near the gaping hole.
In a post on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter, the city council said: “For this reason, we've taken immediate action to erect fencing around the area to keep people safe.

“We will continue to monitor the structure.”
The Argus has contacted the city council for further comment and requested the safety report in full.
