Brighton has been ranked one of the country’s best cities for a festive escape.

A new study had put the city in the top ten for a December break based on the number of restaurants and attractions, the price of a hotel during the month and social media interest.

Ranked seventh, Brighton was praised for its high number of restaurants per 10 kilometres squared, 77, and its relatively affordable hotels.

According to the study,  the average price for a hotel per night is £84, which is the cheapest in the top ten.

With eight million Instagram posts and three billion TikTok posts tagging Brighton, it remains popular on social media.

In the top three were Manchester, Whitby and York.

At £124 a night for a hotel, Manchester is one of the more expensive choices, but Christmas Tree World, the Christmas tree retailer who commissioned the study, said its number of restaurants and festive attractions “makes up for” the price.

Whitby is the only other seaside town in the top ten and its sandy beaches are “perfect for a winter walk,” the researchers said.

Rounding off the top three is York, scoring highly thanks to its restaurants and shops on its medieval cobbled streets.

The city is also renowned for its traditional Christmas market, which is partly why festive stays in York are pricier at an average of £139 per night.
