A glasshouse which was owned by supermarket lettuce growers is up for sale.

Administrators were brought in at Madestein Ltd and Fresh Willow Ltd, two lettuce-growing companies based on the edge of Chichester, earlier this year.

The freehold site in Vinnetrow Road, Runcton, near the city has 26,829 square metres of glasshouses with cold storage for fresh produce and neighbouring office accommodation.

Plants and machinery remain in the property too.

The joint administrators of the two companies have instructed estate agent Savills, and specialist asset advisory company SIA Group to jointly handle the sale of the site.

Steve Baluchi, one of the administrators from specialist business advisory firm FRP, said: “While every effort has been made to achieve a going concern sale, we are now extending the opportunity to include parties who may repurpose the site for alternative purposes.”

The business had operated from the Leythorne Nurseries at Vinnetrow Road since the early 1980s and has been growing lettuces for supply to supermarkets since 1995.

Since 2015, the business has worked from two glasshouses primarily growing lettuces but previously also growing basil, production of which has currently paused.

The nursery is the sole supplier of curly leaf lettuce to two of the UK’s largest supermarkets.
