Fire engines were called to reports of a tanker fire.
Crews were called to the A24 at Southwater near Horsham on Tuesday at 3.30pm.
Upon arrival, crews found that the brakes on the tanker had overheated.
Crews from Horsham and Storrington used their fire hoses to cool the brakes and left by around 4.15pm.
Traffic was slow in the area and people were being urged to avoid the road while emergency services dealt with the incident.
