Sussex fell silent this weekend to honour those who died in conflicts. A two-minute silence took place across the county at 11am today to commemorate the end of the First World War and other conflicts involving British and Commonwealth forces.

Crowds gathered at memorials and wreaths were laid to remember people who died in wars. In Hove, people gathered around the war memorial in Grand Avenue to mark Remembrance Day on Saturday.

Air Marshal Peter Miller, who was in charge of organising the service, said: “In the last ten or 15 years they have become much more important and we see more people attending and taking notice of them.

"I think it is very important for the nation, these rituals are observed across the country and it pulls people together.”

Brighton’s annual Remembrance Sunday parade took place at the Old Steine. Shani Hart, who watched the parade, said: “Remembrance means family for me, my father was at Dunkirk and I used to go to Dunkirk to sell poppies.

“We need to show some respect and get the younger generations back involved.”

Other events also took place in Worthing, Shoreham and across the county. Click on our gallery at the top of the article to see pictures from various Remembrance events.

In Horsham, hundreds flocked to the war memorial. The Remembrance parade proceeded down North Street, through East Street and into the Carfax arriving at the War Memorial to then mark the start of the service.

In Crowborough, a group of Beacon Academy students took part in the Armistice Day Service on Saturday and paid tribute to the fallen and those who continue to risk their lives for their countries.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said today: "The courage and commitment shown by our servicemen and women, both today and throughout the generations that came before them, is humbling and I know many across the country will be honouring their memory today in quiet reflection.

"Recent events have served as a stark reminder that we cannot take the hard-earned peace we live in for granted, which is why I am honoured to lay a wreath on behalf of the nation in the memory of all those that have lost their lives defending our country and the values we hold so close.

"I am determined to ensure we never forget the ultimate sacrifice they have made."
