Strong winds are battering the Sussex coast amid a yellow thunderstorm warning.

Brighton beach was hit by winds of up to 40mph yesterday as the England was hit by Storm Debi, a powerful storm which originated in Ireland. 

The Palace Pier was battered by waves of up to six feet and brave beachgoers were splashed as they watched the sea from the Doughnut Groyne.

Argus Camera Club member Rose Jones was out in Brighton yesterday and caught some snaps of the blustery weather.

While the wind has dropped slightly, with gusts nearer to 30mph today, "thundery, squally rain" is heading east across the south coast this morning.

All of the county has been included in the Met Office's latest yellow weather warning, which is in place until 12pm today.

Officials at the national weather service have warned of potential damage to buildings from lightning strikes or strong and gusty winds.

Driving conditions are being affected by spray and standing water, particularly in the west of the county in Bognor and Felpham which continue to be impacted by recent wet weather. 

Met Office officials also warning of some short term loss of power.
