A second weather warning has been issued across Sussex as the county is hit by a cold snap.

Snow is forecast across the county later this afternoon and into the early evening, with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning for ice.

The warning from the national weather service is in place from 3pm today until 3am tomorrow.

Ice and small amounts of snow could lead to slippery surfaces in a few places.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: “Parts of southern Britain are likely to see some snow showers during Monday afternoon and the first part of the night.

“Most places will see little or no lying snow, but one or two centimetres may settle in one or two places, mostly over high ground.

“In addition, some icy surfaces are possible for a time. However, the chance of this reduces by dawn on Tuesday as snow showers clear to the west and surfaces dry out.”

A weather warning for ice was in place for northern parts of the county and was lifted earlier this morning.

It comes as a cold health alert has been issued across South East England until Friday.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at the UK Health Security Agency, said: “With the Met Office forecasting drops in temperature across the UK, it is important to check in on the wellbeing of those most vulnerable to the cold.

“Cold weather can increase the risks of heart attacks, strokes and chest infections, so it can have a serious impact on health, particularly for older people and those with pre-existing health conditions.

“Temperatures are expected to turn particularly cold overnight, as we would expect at this time of year.

“If you have a pre-existing medical condition or are over the age of 65, it is important to try and heat the rooms where you spend most of your time, such as your living room or bedroom, in the coming days.”
