A bakery chain says it is disappointed one of its new sites has been graffitied before it has opened.
Gail’s Bakery is soon opening a branch on the Seven Dials roundabout, Brighton, but many people are seemingly frustrated by the plans.
The word “boring” and a large penis have been spray-painted on the building, while others have taken to social media to share their opinions.
Laura King said on a Seven Dials Facebook group: “I've boycotted them since they stopped taking cash. Looks like other people may have too.”
Juliette Jaccard said: “No to a £5 pain au chocolat, because even with costs rising right left and centre you absolutely cannot justify those prices.”
Nick Saxon said: “There are already plenty of cafes, and sandwich shops in the Dials.
“This will probably result in a few of the local independents closing. They will employ locals but at the expense of other places closing.
“All of their products are made off site. It’s over priced in my opinion.”
The building was briefly home to Night Shift, a wine and tapas bar, last year, but has been empty in recent months.
A spokesman for Gail’s, which already has branches in North Road, Brighton, and Church Road, Hove, said the response has been a shame.
“It is sad to see comments from a small proportion of the community in Seven Dials and the recent graffiti outside our bakery,” he said.
“We’ve been serving Brighton craft baking and speciality coffee for over seven years now and really love this neighbourhood.

“We see great beauty in bringing diversity to the high street and like to play our part in positively impacting the food system.
“We do this by working with small craft artisan suppliers who care about sourcing ethically like we do, minimising our impact on the environment with waste reduction initiatives and supporting local charities and groups where we can with food donations.”
Gail’s also plans to open a store in Lewes High Street in the former NatWest bank building.
