Mouse droppings were found in a kebab shop during its food hygiene inspection.

Yummies Pizza and Kebab Takeaway in Landgate, Rye, was ordered to improve after it failed to comply with hygiene standards.

Simon Edwards, a senior environmental health officer, inspected the takeaway and found mouse droppings in a number of different places.

In a report, released to The Argus following a Freedom of Information request, Mr Edwards said the standard of cleaning of the kitchen was “poor”, with greasy and dirty floors and walls under and behind equipment.

An external door did not fit well, which allowed mice to enter the premises.

Additionally, the door seal to one of the fridges was damaged, so “could not be maintained in a hygienic condition”.

The takeaway was given a zero out of five rating, meaning urgent improvement is necessary.

It was inspected on Friday, November 10, and Mr Edwards also noticed other unhygienic practices, including rolling out pizza dough on the freezer top, which "risks contamination".

There was “no evidence” that staff had received formal food hygiene training.

The takeaway did not have coloured chopping boards to prevent cross-contamination or a temperature probe to ensure foods are cooked to a safe temperature.

Mr Edwards ordered the manager of Yummies to fix these issues and ensure all food handlers receive the correct training.

He reminded the manager, whose name is redacted in the report, that the training must be renewed every three years.

Other recommendations included putting use-by dates on foods which are prepared in house and when frozen or defrosted.

There was no record of opening and closing checks which, Mr Edwards said, “should be part of the culture” and carried out as a “matter of routine”.

The takeaway manager was told that if they did not carry out the recommendations made in the report, to comply with the hygiene improvement notice, it would be an offence.

Offenders can be fined or even jailed for up to two years.

A spokesman for Rother District Council said: "The notices are being complied with.

"A re-inspection will be undertaken shortly and a re-rating will be carried out."
