The city’s only community-owned pub is fighting to survive as it battles to balance the books.

The Bevy in Hillside, Moulsecoomb, announced it has closed until further notice after warning last year that it faced shutting for good due to the cost of living crisis and inflation.

Owners admitted in June last year that the pub, which was founded by residents in 2014, had “never really turned a profit” since it opened.

They also revealed the pub had been losing roughly £3,000 a month, with the rising cost of stock, rent and utilities all putting the venue’s future in doubt.

In a post on social media, The Bevy thanked customers and residents for their goodwill messages after announcing the temporary closure.

The pub said: “We ain’t done just yet, but we do need to find a way to balance the books.

“It is costing us nearly £500 a day before we even open the doors and we need to reduce that along with improving our takings.

“We are hoping to open later in the week, although we might be a temporary trendy dry bar.”

The pub also said they would be planning to serve their seniors’ club as planned.

“There’s no way we are letting them down,” the pub’s owners said.

The Bevy is the only community-owned pub on a housing estate in the UK.
