An ultrarunner trekking the length of Africa has switched to running at night to avoid the punishing conditions of the Sahara Desert.
Russell Cook, from Worthing, has travelled more than 8,000 miles as part of his journey from southern Africa to the coast of the Mediterranean to raise money for two charities and become “the first person ever to run the entire length of Africa”.
Having faced a series of complications, including issues with visas and even an armed robbery, Russell has now reached the Sahara Desert, where temperatures can reach up to 47C.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Russell, also known as “The Hardest Geezer”, said: “I knew this would be a particularly rough part of the mission but these sandstorms are different gravy.
“Body is absolutely wrecked. Constant state of pain. Last stretch. Will make it happen.”
He also said he had switched to “night shifts” to avoid the “brutal Sahara daytime conditions”.
Russell said: “[I’ve] always enjoyed running at night. Me, my thoughts and total darkness. Very peaceful.”
He hopes to complete his trek across Africa, equivalent to more than 360 marathons, next month.
