A weather warning has been issued for coastal Sussex as strong winds are set to cause disruption.

The Met Office alert is in place from 1am to 12pm on Tuesday, April 9.

Winds of up to 45mph are set to batter Brighton and unsettled conditions look likely, with bands of rain, strong winds and cooler temperatures.

A spokeswoman for the national weather service said: "Strong winds are likely to bring hazardous coastal conditions and could cause some inland disruption."

"It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves."

Motorists are told to expect delays, as are rail passengers.

Short term losses of power are possible.

The Met Office and RNLI issue the following safety advice to beachgoers in windy weather:

  • Head to a lifeguarded beach
  • Follow RNLI float to Live advice if you find yourself struggling in the water
  • Check the tide times to avoid getting cut off by the tide coming in
  • Call 999 and ask for the coastguard in an emergency
