Visitors to a national beauty spot have been warned to stay at least five metres away from the cliff edge.

The warning was issued by The National Trust to people visiting Birling Gap, near Seaford, on Tuesday.

It comes just hours after the weather alert for strong winds across the county came to an end.

A spokesman for The National Trust said: "It is blowing a hoolie out there at the moment.

"If you are thinking of visiting we advise parking in our overflow car park and for your own safety stay at least five metres away from the cliff edge.

"High tide today is at 12.24pm and we are expecting the sea to come all the way up to the base of the cliffs so steer clear of the beach at this time."

The warning comes after a man was spotted dangling his legs over the cliff edge.

Photographer JJ Waller captured the scenes just miles from two recent cliff collapses.

These happened at nearby Seaford Head and Peacehaven, which prompted councils and HM Coastguard to launch a campaign about the dangers of unstable chalk cliffs.

People are also reminded to avoid being near cliff bases, especially at high tide.

The latest cliff fall was reported in Seaford on Monday.
