Residents have been forced to wade through flood waters as they try to save their homes from damage.

Homeowners in Littlehampton were hit by a deluge of water this morning after the River Arun overflowed overnight.

Residents said they were “petrified” that their properties could be in danger of being submerged and their belongings destroyed.

They traipsed through the flood waters as the water left by Storm Kathleen forced emergency services to rescue residents in dinghies.

A nearby holiday park was left underwater with residents huddling in a nearby pub while they waited to be rescued.

The flooding was described by one resident as the “worst he has seen in 20 years” of living in the area.

A refuge centre was set up in the nearby Wave Leisure Centre in Littlehampton for residents affected by the flooding.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said they have left the scene of three major incidents but warned that more flooding could come with high tides.

Emergency services are being supported by HM Coastguard and RNLI lifeboat crews.
