Scaffolding is up and work is due to begin on an unsafe roof which has closed a main city centre road for days.

Part of the roof of Boots in North Street, Brighton, became insecure due to strong winds from Storm Kathleen on Tuesday.

Since then, the road has been cordoned off between Queen's Road and Portland Street.

Now, scaffolding is up on the building and work to make the building safe is due to start soon.

Almost 30 Brighton and Hove Bus services are having to use diversions while the closure is in place.

The road is scheduled to reopen on Friday afternoon but repair works could take longer due to poor weather.

Councillor Trevor Muten, chairman of the transport and sustainability committee, said: “The strong winds during Storm Kathleen earlier this week have caused damage to Boots roof requiring the closure of North Street in order to undertake urgent repairs.

“We’ve stressed to Boots the urgency of these repairs and of re-opening the roads affected for pedestrians, bus passengers and businesses.”
