A warning has been issued to the public after turtles were found on beaches.

So far this year, three have been found in various places along the south coast.

The British Divers Marine Life Rescue, a charity based in Uckfield that responds to marine mammals in distress, said these turtles are likely to be hypothermic and needing attention.

None have yet washed up in Sussex however people in the county have been told to be aware after one washed up in Kent.

Two more washed up in Cornwall and Dorset.

A spokesman for the charity said: "Over the last week, three turtles have been found on the English south coast.

"Recent storms and rough seas have likely pushed them off course.

"Unfortunately, the turtle found in Kent was refloated back into the sea by well-meaning members of the public

"Please, do not send them back into the sea. They will likely be hypothermic and need attention."

People who come across turtles on the beaches have been advised to call the charity on 01825 765546.

They have also been asked to wrap the turtle up in a dry towel or similar material to maintain its temperature.

The charity has a 24 hour helpline and access to specialist teams.
