A mystery sailboat spotted off the coast has been revealed as a prototype vessel which once travelled the globe.

The giant Dar Mlodziezy anchored off the coast of Brighton on Wednesday while its crew soaked up the sunshine eight miles out to sea.

It is the second largest tall ship in the world and serves as a training vessel for 136 cadets at Gdynia Maritime Academy, Poland.

Dar Mlodziezy was initially built for the Soviet merchant fleet and set sail for the first time in 1982.

Five years later she circumnavigated the globe and has competed in tall ships races across the world up to this date.

It was on its way back to Antwerp Maritime Academy with more than 100 students and teachers due to return home after a trip to Algeciras in the Straits of Gibraltar.

On April 21 it will head for Lerwick in the Shetland Islands.
