Businesses in Sussex are owed more than £1 million by The Body Shop after the company filed for administration.

Filings for the cosmetics company show that some businesses in the area are owned hundreds of thousands of pounds which they are trying to recoup.

The Body Shop was forced to close several of its stores after entering administration earlier this year.

Documents on Companies House show that £44.6 million is owed to creditors across the world. Of that figure, £1.1 million is owed to businesses registered in Sussex.

The Body Shop entered administration in February, announcing that 76 stores would be set to close.

Nearly 500 employees lost their jobs.

The business, set up by Dame Anita Roddick in Brighton in 1976 and has retained its links to Sussex for nearly half a century.

Dame Anita died the following year in Chichester at the age of 64 after suffering from a brain haemorrhage.

The Body Shop has one store in Brighton, in North Street, as well as a branch in George Street in Hove.

The company also has six other stores across Sussex, with shops in Worthing, Horsham, Eastbourne, Crawley, Chichester and Hastings.
