Firefighters have been called to a takeaway shop fire this morning.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was called to London Road, Bexhill shortly after 8.40am to find smoke coming from a building.

Four fire engines attended the scene where the fire was found in the kitchen of the shop.

The fire has now been extinguished however members of the public are still being urged to avoid the area.

The road remains closed.

A spokesman for the fire service said this morning: "East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was called at 8.41am on April 30 to reports of smoke coming from a building in Bexhill.

"As of 9.10am four fire engines are at the commercial premises on London Road.

"The fire is in a kitchen of a vacant takeaway and firefighters are wearing breathing apparatus while putting out the fire.

"Members of the public are asked to avoid the area.

"If you live nearby, please keep doors and windows closed as there is a lot of smoke. There are no reports of injuries."

A spokesman then confirmed at 10.40am that the fire had been extinguished.

They said: "East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and Sussex Police request members of the public continue to stay away from scene until further notice. The road currently remains closed."
