A resident has said one of the city's most popular dog-walking spots has turned into a “ghost park” after suspected dog poisonings.

Chris Henry, director of operations for Hove and Portslade Labour MP Peter Kyle, visited Hove Park over the weekend with his dog Fred.

He said it was empty due to people fearing for their pets.

At least one dog died and others fell ill after eating something in Hove Park last week.

Chris said: “8am, and the park would usually be alive with dogs and dog walkers.

“Today, there was an eerie silence around the huge space with literally no dogs around. It seems locals are avoiding the space since the [suspected] poisonings, Fred, had the place to himself.

“If the poisoner’s intention was to clear the park of dogs, then they have succeeded - it was like a ghost park!”

Peter Kyle said: “This is heartbreaking and shocking. I’m glad the police and the council have acted quickly to investigate, and I urge everyone in the park to keep a lookout for suspicious behaviour and suspicious objects. I love this park - like all the locals do - it’s the best in the city - so let’s reclaim it back as soon as possible.”
