It’s very rare I end up on the sofa at 1am drinking wine and reading a church pamphlet but it’s not often I review a play at St. Bartholomew’s.

It was The Bootmaker’s Daughter which was quite brilliant (you can read my review elsewhere on the site) but I was just as fascinated by the venue itself.

Hence I ended up splashing out on The Concise Guide to St Bart’s at a rather expensive £2 (it was only 14 pages!) and here’s what I learnt.

It’s the tallest Parish Church in the UK and possibly Europe.

It’s Grade 1 listed.

The person who told me it was built to the dimensions of Noah’s Ark is a liar.

When it is was opened in 1874 its height concerned nearby residents who complained the church was causing down-draughts in their chimneys.

It has a 25 foot Rose Window – one of the largest in England.

It cost £18,000 to build and took from 1872 until 1874.

Right – religious history lesson over.

I’m off to An Infinite Line at The Basement tonight which was formerly the old Argus building but I won’t bore you with all that.
