Just looking through the Argus cutting out the Fringe clippings for our files and I came across the article in the comments section titled, "No more than a freak show".

Jean I hear what your saying, but it sounds like this: nahhh nahhh nahhh! I’m sorry but you have got them all wrong. I have met the Lady Boy performers and management year after year and they are lovely! The dancers are always laughing and they are delighted with the people of Brighton and coming to our city.

I am sure Jean has had some great opinions in the past and some of the points and views are valid. But in this case comparing transsexuals, the sex trade and the poverty in Thailand with the Lady Boys of Bangkok simply doesn’t add up.

The article just sounds like it was written by a conservative and prudish woman who doesn’t know how to enjoy herself and is using examples of the sex trade, paedophilia, feminism and exploitation to bring down a really good production. All the Lady Boys of Bangkok are doing is very successfully and ‘cleanly’ entertaining the public – who by the way love them!

Good on the council for being so great, open minded and helpful; they are hugely supportive of external venues during festival time and enable a very popular show to return year after year! If the council were to take heed of this kind of voice what a dull and plain city we would live in.

The council have rightfully expressed concern about the growing number of lap-dancing clubs in Brighton and so they should, but comparing these to this show is ridiculous.

I am not sure if you have even been to see the Lady Boys of Bangkok? Saying that it is “sex entertainment” is completely off the mark. These are performers dancing and miming to music, it's family fun and most of the audience is female. It’s not for leering men and it’s not erotic! It’s glamorous, flamboyant, sparkly and fun - perhaps something Jean is not familiar with?
