Readers with reduced visual capacity might find the font(which is extremely 'quiet' harder to read easily than on the old site.

Shame too that only a selection of the letters from the letters page of the print version are offered and none of today's 'left hand page' letters on King Alfred (from William Tessier, Lindy Banks and cllr Ted Kemble). It means if people are away they cannot read the Argus online and keep up with letters that are especially featured.

Just go back to the old one - that had it's faults but the news was up-to-date - and it worked - unlike several sections of this one.

i hope this was done as a school project!!
This site has a worse design than before, is full of coding errors (61 at last count according to the W3C website checker), isn't accessible from my work pc or pda anymore and manages to convey even less information on the front page.
Its worse than a night out in Portslade!

Site admin, Brighton says...
9:59am Thu 17 Jul 08

Thank you for your comments - we really do appreciate any feedback you offer.

We would also ask that you bear with us over the next few days - this has been a big jobs and as you've probably noticed there are quite a few bugs/issues to sort out.

Once these are resovled we hope that the site will offer you a lot more and we'll be looking to really expand the content over the coming months.

Similarly, there has been a delay in uploading news, sport, letters etc - all of this should be brought completely up-to-date by the end of the day.

birthofanorange, Hove says...
10:01am Thu 17 Jul 08

Totally agree with ^^. There was nothing wrong the previous style. Why fix it if it ain't broke? This is certainly NOT clearer or easier and this new log-in means that most of the more 'interesting' comments won't be appearing...shame, really.
Oh well, I can see The Argus losing even more readers.

Ben Martin, Brighton says...
10:22am Thu 17 Jul 08

I think the new website is far too busy. You dont have to have everything on every page.
I also agree with the comment made about the text being right up against the left of the page. Thats annoying.
I'm not a tekky but the page seems to big for the browser as well, although that could just be me.

One thing that is an improvement is those irritating adverts in the middle of a story seem to have gone.

jobseeker, brighton says...

Whoever did the redesign is clearly an incompetant loon, without basic webskills. However, the site probably "looked OK on their Mac", so that's all that matters really, isn't it?

The most irritating part of the design for me is having everything squeezed into tiny columns that are about 1/8th of the width of my monitor screen.

you just don't get it, do you? The critera for good web design is not "do the end users like it?" or "does the site conform to the rules of HTML?" - they are 1. "Does it look OK on the designer's Mac?" and 2. "Did they have nice biscuits at the pretentious 2-hour 'vision and branding strategy' meeting that the head of marketing had at the designer's office?"
You must also realise that the majority of people involved in the process have no proper technical skills at all and spend the bulk of their disposal income cocaine.

D3xt3r, Hove says...

To be fair, nice one for updating it. However there are a few things that need looking at. For a start, you dont need the Editors Choice or National News modules on all the pages. They take up more space and its more info being shoved in the users face, that they don't need. The sports page is a good example of this. The important stuff here is the stories, so they should be the most visible and accessible parts of the page. By removing Editors Choice and National News from that page would mean you could spread the stories across two columns, making it far easier for the user to find what they want. Not to patronise, but think about what you would want from the site if you were a user. The home page is pretty busy, which is often quite off-putting for most people. You don't need to try and put as much information as possible on it, just whats essential. As long as the navigation is obvious, people will find what they need. It only takes a click for someone to go to another website and not come back. The other comments seem to suggest that people don't like it, but people are always quick to comment when something changes, usually in a negative way. I'm sure you'll fix the dead links (Going Green?) in time and get the site sorted.
Just my twopennies worth....

To be fair, most of those failed validation checks are unclosed paragraph and list item tags. Thats more likely to be a shoddy CMS than an incompetent web editor. Its not fair to expect someone who updates a site like this to be fluent in HTML/CSS, PHP, C, Ruby or any other language. Thats the point of a CMS. I cant really see the Argus having a team of hardcore techies looking after their website. If the CMS doesn't close the tags properly (which I agree is bad practice) then it shouldn't use the srtict XHTML DOC TYPE. Don't blame the web monkies.

jon, says...
3:48pm Thu 17 Jul 08

The web monkeys are fluent in PHP, and have actually contributed bugfixes to the PHP project itself. They can also spell 'monkeys'. On the design, yes, it did look good on the designer's Mac. Apropos the biscuits and cocaine, no comment.

I 've just looked at the news page and it contains items from days, months and even years ago. I couldn't find anything for today.

Showing old news instead of NEWS is a sign of a failing organisation that can't cut the mustard - look online at The Mirror to see thin content problem that makes them look bad.

I was really disoriented clicking on the Hoogstraten story to then see it wasn't actually NEWS! It was something from THE ARCHIVE!

I agree with a couple of postings that rather a lot is sprayed onto the page. After the market research analysis shows you what was most needed/popular I hope to see this simplified and thinned out.

One amazing plus from my pov. Some newspapers upload instantly, some take forever. You and The Daily Mail and The Telegraph and The Guardian were the worst. The New York Times was instant. Now The Argus too is instant. Hurrah! And on dialup too.

Dave Osbourne, Hove says...
9:25pm Thu 17 Jul 08

Obviously, being the website of a newspaper, the first link I clicked on at the top was "News". The first five stories are from:

Friday 8th February 2008

Tuesday 11th December 2007

Wednesday 15th August 2007

Friday 15th June 2007

Tuesday 21st November 2006

All very interesting, but only one story from this year - and not even today?

washpot, littlehampton says...

it's bland-it's boring-it's difficult to navigate-it's recycled news and it's giving me eyestrain reading it. it's an extremly poor substitute for a proven working site, however if any of us think our comments will make any difference we're deluded. no one will change anything because "THEY WILL SOON GET USED TO IT-WE'RE ARTISTIC SO WE'RE RIGHT AND NOT ABOUT TO BACK DOWN" it's a lesson every company's learnt from labour-ignore what people say for long enough and they forget the problem then you can get away with anything.

Drat! Have just attempted (twice using two separate entry points) to fill in the form submitting the following question to the Friday Inquisition visitor - Josh Arghiros - and each time I pressed send i got a message telling me that the form ID was not recognised, etc.

That is bad form! Very bad form.

For the record in case anyone else looks at this and wants to put the question (or try to) on Friday i wanted to ask the following:

Frank Gehry has informed the world's media that he and his practice are no longer on the King Alfred development team. When was Karis given formal notification of this and when did Karis give notice of it to Brighton & Hove City Council. i can't be online Friday.

I agree wholeheartedly with D3xt3r's post.
Also , yesterday there seemd to be a link to 'local news', today I cant find it!
Has it disappeared? Or have I lost it among all the other stuff on every page?
Being a local, reading a local paper, the local news is my first port of call on this website.
Everything else on the site is secondary.

When a pizza has too many toppings,
its hard to distiguish each flavour.
The new look Argus website is similar, there really is far too much on every page.

I wasnt having a go, Jon, I was actually defending them from the likes of Feline1. I may have spelt monkeys incorrectly, but at least able to read and understand the tone of a comment, unlike yourself. So, if they're so clever, why doesnt the CMS close the list and paragraph tags then?
Also, being married to an Argus employee, I know what a bunch of useless idiots the Argus tech people are. From your comment, I will assume you are one of them. So thanks for being rude. After a slew of posts slagging you off, I was only trying to give the other side of the argument. And you/they might be fluent in PHP, but quite clearly have no idea about usability/design. But then I suppose you've sacked all your designers. Lets hope your not next, eh?
