The husband of a woman stabbed to death in the street has appeared in court accused of killing her.

Serbian-born Hajrudin Hasanovic spoke only to confirm his name when he appeared at Chichester Magistrates’ Court yesterday morning charged with murder.

The 32-year-old is accused of stabbing his wife, Cassandra, when she arrived at the home of relatives with whom she had been staying.

Mrs Hasanovic, 24, was attacked in Normanton Avenue, Bognor, on Tuesday at about 3pm.

It is believed she was stabbed in front of her two young children, both aged under five. Neighbours said they heard raised voices followed by screaming.

Mrs Hasanovic is thought to have moved with her children to stay with family at a property in Nyewood Lane which backs on to Normanton Avenue.

The stabbing happened near the back gate of the house and Mrs Hasanovic is thought to have staggered a short distance before collapsing.

Neighbours returned home from work to find the street cordoned off. Police recovered a kitchen knife from the scene.

Paramedics tried to revive Mrs Hasanovic before taking her by ambulance to St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester with a police escort.

Yesterday, The Argus revealed Sussex Police officers had visited Mrs Hasanovic just hours before she was killed.

An investigation will be carried out by the Independent Police Complaints Commission, the police watchdog, to see if the officers did anything wrong or whether they could have done more to help her.

Mr Hasanovic, who gave his address in court as Prescott Close, Guston, Dover, was arrested on Wednesday.

At the time of his arrest police gave his address as Dunn Close in Eastney, Portsmouth.

His solicitor Howard Wilkinson, of Swaine and Co in Havant, Hampshire, made no application for bail.

Mr Hasanovic was remanded in custody and was ordered to appear at Lewes Crown Court on August 14.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the attack to contact them on 0845 6070999 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 quoting Operation Ryton.
