A model who was banned from driving after killing a teenage motorcyclist has been caught behind the wheel.

Lauren Coppen, 22, disregarded the six-month ban she was given in April for ploughing into Jason Harding, 19, as he rode his motorbike in Walberton, near Arundel, last year.

She was caught driving again on July 23 by police officers.

Last night Mr Harding’s aunt, Karen Bernard, said: “She’s basically sticking two fingers up to Jason and to the law.

“While we’re still going through so much pain because of what happened she’s just happy to flout the law again. We’re so angry.”

Single mother Coppen, of Kilwich Close, Bognor Regis, admitted getting behind the wheel of her Citroen C3 just weeks into the ban she received at Chichester Magistrates’ Court.

She was given the ban in April this year after being convicted of driving without due care and attention following the crash in The Street, Walberton, on March 18, 2007.

Mr Harding, from Eastergate, near Fontwell, died of his injuries.

Prosecutor Gaynor Byng told the court the mother of one was spotted driving again in Kilwich Road.

She said the police officers followed her to Yapton Road in Chichester after recognising the vehicle from a photograph they had seen, until she pulled over and parked.

Miss Byng said: “She admitted to officers that she was disqualified until October this year but said she had an appeal going on.

“The officers checked this on the Police National Computer and found that this appeal had been stopped in June.” Mrs Bernard, who was present during yesterday’s hearing, told The Argus she also spotted Coppen driving during the ban after seeing her in a shop and reported it to the police.

Coppen, who is six weeks pregnant, admitted driving while disqualified and having no insurance.

Sharon Waggett, defending, said she relied on the car twice a week to get to her part-time job as an administrator.

Coppen was given the car by her grandparents when they moved to Spain at the beginning of April. Miss Waggett told the court Coppen was suffering severe depression.

Magistrates decided to wait for a pre-sentence report before sentencing Coppen and warned her a jail term was a possibility.

Mrs Bernard added: “She should have got a stiffer sentence the first time around.

“I hope they use the full force of the law this time around and make sure she cannot drive again in the near future.”

Magistrates can impose a ban of any length for the offences.
