Work has started on the restoration of Brighton’s seafront Birdcage Bandstand.
The Grade II listed building will be returned to its former glory, with the top part of the stand once again hosting concerts and events.
The basement and lower part of the building will be converted from toilets and storage facilities to a café.
The contractors are Lewes-based Cheesmur and the renovation work will take a year. Brighton architects DRP will be overseeing the project on behalf of Brighton and Hove City Council.
Geoffrey Theobald, cabinet member for the environment, said: “Restoration of the bandstand has been one of our administration’s top priorities so it’s wonderful to see the work start.
“The bandstand is of historic and cultural importance to our city, and much loved by our residents, so we are all looking forward to returning this jewel in the seafront crown back to its former glory.”
