The inaugural Loop Loud came to a disappointing climax with Steve Mason's Black Affair.
The former Beta Band frontman had abandoned his old outfit' melodic charm for sub-Ian Brown mumbling backed by dull minimal electronic beats.
It was a shame after the considerable energy built up by local supports, with Maths Class proving they are among the most proficient Brighton bands.
Energetic indie four-piece Flash Guns seemed more suited for The Great Escape festival.
But openers Restlesslist summed up the Loop ethos with their digital sample technology and live instrumentation.
It was a brilliant performance which deserved to be higher up the bill.
